The end of another year came much to fast. Our last days were filled with field trips, water wall construction, and a therapy dog visit. It is a tricky juxtaposition to be present in the moment and documenting it as well. Almost one month later here I am reminiscing about the last days of school. In the end, I am most grateful to have called these 23 children my class.
Over the past several weeks first graders have been studying air and weather. One sunny day in April seemed like the perfect time to study wind. ....With 23 students. And 23 kites. Some of them new how to fly a kite but most of them did not. It was a great day tangles and all! I know that I have said this before but I'll say it again, "I love first grade!" I love the way they like each other. Today a friend returned from their extended vacation. So many friends greeted him with a hug and a kind, " Hello, I missed you!" They are always so eager to greet each other. What a wonderful way to start the day. I love the way first graders persevere! We were playing a cooperative spelling game during word study. The word they were spelling together was because. Students joined in the game as they returned from reading. It was her turn to say the next letter. Students who had gotten out of the game were listening in. " I don't think she knows the word," someone said. There was some hesitation but then slowly I watched her begin raising her fingers and spelling the word because to herself. "S!" She called out. She was correct the whole class clapped. I love all plants but my favorite plants are succulents! Today we visited the greenhouse and Mrs. Freeth's horticulture class. First graders partnered with an older student to plant their own succulent. I hope you love succulents! I know you love your first grader, too! Sometimes things are hard. Watching your friends successfully launch a balloon rocket can seem easy, until you try and try and try. You might feel like giving up when each time your balloon fizzles out and doesn't move down the flight line. But then you try a little positive self talk and you give it one more try....
First graders brainstormed a new name for one of our classroom jobs. Table helpers really need to do more than get materials out and put them away. We decided that they also should keep track of pencils and things that are out of place around our classroom so a bigger job means a better name! Things were finalized down to two possibilities, president and custodian. It was time for a debate. After lunch some read speeches for one name over another. Mrs. Kenyon read the results at the end of voting. Scientists explored compressed air to make balloon rockets! It was a good day to play! Mathematicians developed survey questions and collected data. There was lots to talk about in first grade today1 You can check out our blogs new home on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/Mrs.MillersFirstGradeHCS Happy Reading! Readers have been exploring ways to use post it notes to hold on to their thinking in non-fiction text. One way is to notice their reader's voice. This reader is recording something surprising that he learned. You might be wondreing what these students are doing standing on chairs! They are exploring the way a twirler moves through the air! |
